A web hosting package is
essentially a set of basic web hosting services plus a
variety of other web services like emails, databases,
shopping carts with a few perks tossed in like free domain
names, templates, etc. With the proliferation of companies
providing almost the same basic web hosting service, a
novice website owner or builder may feel daunted choosing
amongst the many plans or web hosting packages available.
The selection process should actually start with knowing the
needs of a particular site, whether it is a static or
interactive page, and its use, whether it is for information
dissemination or even order taking. However, not all web
hosting packages are created the same. There are several
factors that must be considered in choosing a web hosting
package.
Disk space is the amount of files that you can store in your
hosts' server; it is the MB or megabytes that you usually
see. A typical web page would be anywhere between 2 Kb and
50 Kb while a jpeg picture that would occupy half of a 15”
monitor would be more or less 240 KB. On the other hand,
audio files require more than 1 MB per minute of playtime
while for video, it is several times more. These numbers
should give you an idea of the amount your prospective site
will consume. Bandwidth is the amount of data downloadable
from the web server to requesting computers, usually limited
on a weekly or monthly basis. Choice would again be based on
your site's requirements, specifically on the number of
visitors expected.
Perks include free set up, email accounts, newsletter
capability, statistics, and search engine submission. Some
may even throw in CGI-Bin, Perl, and My SQL among others for
database management and SSL certificate and shopping carts
for e-commerce. Registration and renewal of domain name may
be included in the services of the hosting company which may
either come free or with a discount. Likewise, there may
also be templates available for clients’ use. Taking these
into consideration ensures that you will be getting your
money's worth for the package that you choose.
